When William Murphy and Lemuel W. Bowen called in Henry Martyn Leland as a consultant in August of 1902, the Olds Motor Works, makers of the Oldsmobile, never had a clue that the engine that they rejected from Leland will fall into the hands of the company that will later bear the name Cadillac Automobile Company- named after Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French explorer who had discovered Detroit in early Eighteenth Century. Leland was born in Vermont and moved to Detroit to work with wealthy lumberman Robert C. Faulconer and tool designer Charles H. Norton. In 1894, Leland left the two to form his own enterprise and became a successful manufacturer of crankshaft grinders. |
The first antique Cadillac was completed on October 17, 1902. In January the following year, the Cadillac became the first American automobile manufacturer to win the coveted Dewar Trophy for the standardization of automobile parts. Cadillac did not use the "A" designation in 1903; however, later Cadillac publications combined references to the 1903 "Cadillac" and "1904 Model A" and used "Model A." The Model A had refined 10 horsepower single-cylinder copper-jacketed engine was exemplary. What made the Model a best-seller was its reliability, ease, economy of maintenance, and remarkable pulling and climbing capability. The single-cylinder Cadillac would be built until 1909. |
In 1904, Cadillac released two models. The Model A which was the continuation of the 1903 and The Model B. The Model B was the same with the 'A' except the chassis had featured a pressed steel flame axles. In 1905, Cadillac offered five different models: Model B, C, D, E, and F. In 1906, they launched another four models, the two single cylinder models: K and M; and two four cylinder models: L and H. During the next several years, Cadillac launched other models: Models G, H, M, S, and T in 1908; Model "Thirty" in 1911; Types 51, 53, 55, 59, 61, and V-63, in years 1915, '16, '17, '21, '22, and '24 respectively. The new Ninety Degree Cadillac - Series 314 was presented to the public in 1926 and other similar series followed over the next few years.
